The proposals

The Site

The proposals involve the redevelopment of the Raglan and Priory Stands at Edgbaston Stadium and a premium 146-bedroom Radisson RED-branded hotel alongside a coffee shop, restaurant and bar alongside improved new landscaping. The Raglan and Priory Stands are located on the Western side of the Stadium, and the new stand that replaces them will contain a new accessible concourse with improved hospitality facilities.

Edgbaston Stadium is located off the Edgbaston Road, near its junction with the A441, in the heart of Edgbaston, Central Birmingham.

The new stand will maintain the same number of seats as the existing Raglan and Family stands.

The hotel will offer a new pitch-facing restaurant and bar, with a terrace and convertible boxes for spectators.

The new development will enable a continuous swept curve linking the main entrance and the new hotel.

The need

The Raglan and Priory Stands are coming towards the end of their designed lifespan, creating an opportunity to build something truly special at Edgbaston.

By redeveloping the stands for the 21st Century and delivering a premium hotel alongside new leisure and accessible spectator facilities, we plan to energise the wider Edgbaston masterplan, creating a vibrant economic centre around the stadium and delivering lasting investment for the local community.

Edgbaston Stadium currently contributes approximately £35 million to the local economy and projections from the new hotel development increase that to £40 million and £70 million in a cricket World Cup year.

Design

Edgbaston is, first and foremost, a great place to watch live sport or entertainment, so the new stands will retain the same number of seats, whilst delivering improved comfort and sightlines for spectators. The redevelopment will ensure that the new stands will also include fully accessible new concourse space for all.

The proposed 146-bedroom Radisson RED-branded hotel will provide superb facilities for visitors and offer a unique way to experience sport and events at this historic venue. The hotel’s design also includes a restaurant and bar, with an external terrace, providing views over the ground and towards Birmingham city centre, alongside new amenities for day and overnight visitors to enjoy.

More than half of the hotel’s rooms will overlook the cricket ground. Several of the rooms have balconies and are convertible rooms that can also be used as hospitality boxes during matches and as additional meeting spaces for events.

Sustainability

The new hotel and stands are being designed to meet the highest sustainability standards. We are targeting BREEAM Excellent accreditation, in line with the Club’s ambitious targets around sustainability.

Community Contribution

The new development will help realise the employment and skills opportunities Edgbaston already supports through its partnership with Compass’ £1 million Xcelerate with Edgbaston skills and training centre.

The new hotel will also support 134 permanent jobs in the community and drive local economic growth by increasing footfall and welcoming overnight visitors. The Hotel has been specifically designed to complement the new public plaza created during previous stages of the Edgbaston Masterplan.

The main entrance to the hotel will front onto the plaza, contributing to the ongoing realisation of this area as a statement community space.
